Welcome to Engineering 1020!

Tip

Updated 2 Jan 2024: The privacy statement at the bottom now includes the Lab Instructor (Alice).

I trust that you are looking forward to starting ENGI 1020: Introduction to Programming in just a few days! In preparation for the semester, I’d like to ask you to do four things.

  1. You should have received an email today from a tool called Gradescope inviting you to join the course. We will use this tool (which is free for you) to submit exercises and assignments, and for me to provide you with feedback on exams. Please check to ensure that you are able to log into Gradescope using your MUNMail account (choose Log In with Google, then enter your @mun.ca address). If it doesn’t work, please let me know.

  2. Over the coming days you should also receive an email from a tool called Top Hat. We will use this tool for in-class participation. This tool will cost something, but on the other hand, we don’t have a mandatory textbook in this course. You may have already purchased a Top Hat subscription if any of your Fall courses used it.

  3. You will need the Grove Beginner Kit available from the bookstore before your first lab. They currently have 133 kits in stock, which is almost enough (the course has over-filled slightly). I’d suggest getting yours soon, or buying one second-hand from a friend who took the course last semester or last year.

  4. Finally, as this is a large course, it’s challenging for me to learn students' names. This semester, I’d like to try something new: printing out names and faces (a "face book", in the original sense) so that I can look through them before each class. This is entirely optional, but if you’re willing, I am asking you to email me a photo (ideally a headshot) to include in this memory aid.

Privacy statement: I will only share this picture with the Lab Instructor (Alice), and I won’t use it for any purpose besides putting it next to your name so that we can associate names with faces.

See you in January!
